GUITAR & CHOIR

In 2006, Volkmar Zimmermann and Swedish conductor Roland Haraldson initiated this evocative collaboration around the exiting combination of solo guitar and mixed choir. The crisp, slightly percussive sound of the guitar nicely counterbalances the choir’s long and gentle lines. Apart from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s famous suite Romancero Gitano the repertoire consists mainly of works by contemporary composers such as Jonas Tamulionis and Heinz Friedrich Hartig including commissioned compositions by a.o. John Frandsen, Alain Michel Riou, Faye-Ellen Silverman, Jim Clarke, Peter Helms and Hsueh Yung-Shen. Concerts with the Copenhagen-based Kammerkoret Musica and Lithuania’s leading choir Jauna Muzikahave proven the artistic value of a combination of guitar and mixed choir. The immanent problem of dynamic balance between choir and guitar is here solved by the use of a handcrafted amplifier for classical guitar which preserves the natural sound of the instrument. The amplifier is built by luthier Stephan Schlemper .
